WHAT WAS
IN HIS HAND?

Finish the familiar pose before deciding whether the raised hand is empty.

THE DISCREPANCY // 98

A hand rests near the shoulder. The pose is so familiar that the small object can disappear inside it. Some observers remember David holding nothing; the sculpture’s sling makes that remembered emptiness a detail worth revisiting.

Archive lettering study. Follow the original reference below.

THE POSE BEFORE THE OBJECT

Close your eyes and trace the raised arm, from elbow to shoulder. What crosses the back? What do the fingers hold? The body may arrive as one complete image, while the object waits until you deliberately ask for it. Draw the hand on its own before reopening the sculpture.

A DETAIL AT A DIFFERENT SCALE

A classroom photograph, a miniature replica and the marble in the gallery do not give you the same encounter with a small feature. Look at the whole pose, then a close view of the hand. The Galleria’s own description names the sling among features once gilded. That detail has a physical history as well as a visual one.

THE VERSION YOU CARRIED

Suppose you found a photograph of the model you used to draw at school. The hand looks bare in the print, while another angle makes the object unmistakable. Which view would feel like the sculpture you knew? The question can live at the edge of a pose you thought you had already finished.

A remembered gesture can change the way an entire artwork feels. Compare the gaze beside the farmer, then follow the branch you cannot see into the possibility of another familiar arrangement.
