THEORY FILE 004 // MANY-WORLDS

THE BRANCH
YOU CANNOT SEE.

What if another version of the familiar world exists—and the detail you remember belongs there?

01 // THE OTHER VERSION

ONE WORLD FEELS FAMILIAR.

Picture two shelves. On one, the name has the letter you remember. On the other, it has the letter you find today. Each shelf belongs to a complete world. Nobody in either room thinks their shelf is unusual.

Now imagine remembering the other shelf without ever having entered its room. You know the lettering. You remember the shape behind the logo. Yet every object around you belongs to the version you would once have called wrong. Where did that memory come from?

02 // THE PHYSICS

WHAT DOES A BRANCH MEAN?

In the Everett interpretation, the quantum state evolves without a separate collapse rule. Interactions entangle systems with their surroundings; decoherence helps explain why observers experience distinct outcomes. The branches are parts of that quantum description.

The Mandela possibility begins at the edge of that picture: what if the separation were not perfect? Imagine an observer carrying a fragment that belongs to another branch. No journey they can describe. No doorway they remember crossing. Just the strange familiarity of a detail their present world refuses to contain.

03 // THE CROSSING

WHAT WOULD HAVE TO SURVIVE?

If a memory arrived from another branch, why would it survive when the photographs, labels and other records did not? Could the same mechanism carry an independently dated object? Would a second observer report the detail before hearing the first observer’s version?

Follow the silver shin, the cornucopia, and the monocle. Each gives the imagined crossing a familiar shape. If the other room were real, would you recognise its doorway—or only the things you missed after it closed?

Set the gaze in American Gothic beside the gesture of David’s raised hand. One difference lives in a glance, another in a pose. If you had encountered a neighbouring version, which detail would give it away?
