THE DISCREPANCY // 058
The reported version is a plain ring around the Volvo name. The reference iron mark includes an arrow extending toward the upper right. That small projection can feel suddenly conspicuous on an otherwise familiar badge.

FE / 26 — A tiny chemical symbol points out of the circle. The metal remembers its number.
BEFORE THE REFERENCE
Recall a particular car and position: grille, steering wheel or advertisement. Was a diagonal bar also present? Draw the arrow independently from the bar; they are separate elements. Changes in badge finish and model presentation can hide a detail without turning all versions into the same object.
THE TRACE TO FOLLOW
Volvo’s own history describes the iron symbol and its arrow. Compare a dated badge or brochure with your first drawing. A name-only wordmark also needs its own label. Which part of the complete emblem would you have expected to touch if you had traced it with your finger?
Keep your first version
Record the detail before opening a reference. Keep the exact object, release or edition with your comparison. A first recollection and a later discovery can be followed as separate traces.
THE ARROW OUTSIDE THE RING, AGAIN
REPORTED SEQUENCE
arrow → ring only → arrow
First-person discussions describe Volvo with its arrow, an interval remembered as a plain ring, and a later check finding the arrow back. One account dates a recheck to 2022. The mark seems complete again, but the remembered absence remains attached to it.
Compare the same vehicle badge or logo treatment. A word-only mark, cropped image and complete iron symbol are different objects. Save the whole frame around the circle: the detail being sought sits just outside it.
Reported checks and recollections; the sequence is not an authenticated record of a changing artifact.
