ONE FAMILIAR JAR.
ONE UNSETTLED VOWEL.

THE DISCREPANCY // 117

The shape of the jar is familiar, but the name can arrive in two forms. A reported memory places an O after the S: Vasoline. The brand’s own lettering reads Vaseline. The difference is small enough to pass unnoticed in speech and large enough to make the printed word feel as though it has been altered.

Archive lettering study. Follow the original references below.

THE LETTER YOU EXPECT

Write the name before opening either reference. Now picture the object carrying it. Was it a blue-lidded jar in a bathroom, a medicine-cabinet bottle, or a track name on a record sleeve? The two printed words exist. The question is which one your memory puts on the jar.

TWO OBJECTS YOU CAN ACTUALLY FOLLOW

Vaseline’s own history includes vintage bottles in its 1870 timeline entry. Stone Temple Pilots’ official archive lists Vasoline on Thank You. Open each in turn: the product reference gives the E spelling a physical setting, while the band gives the O spelling a musical one. A memory report in the linked discussion specifically describes an older product. That remembered shelf remains a separate place to investigate.

WHICH LABEL CAME HOME WITH YOU?

Imagine finding the jar in a family photograph, sitting where it always stood. Would you enlarge the familiar lid first, or go straight to the vowel? The song can still sound exactly right while the household object seems to carry the wrong name. Put the two references beside your first spelling and keep the setting that arrived before you read either one.

Source trail & editions

Vaseline — vintage bottles in the brand timeline ↗
Primary brand page. See the bottles illustrated under 1870. The timeline’s historical labels are the brand’s presentation; this file does not authenticate the date of every pictured bottle.

Stone Temple Pilots — official album archive ↗
Primary artist archive lists Vasoline on Thank You. This is a song title, not an alternate label for the petroleum-jelly brand.

Reported product spelling ↗
The remembered O is explicitly attached to the household product in this discussion. A report is a lead to an object, not a surviving alternate jar.
