THE DISCREPANCY // 125

A family holiday can feel fixed more firmly than an ordinary date. Some people remember American Thanksgiving as the third Thursday in November. The federal observance is the fourth. This file has an unusual complication: the calendar really does contain a documented dispute over which Thursday should carry the holiday.

PUT A YEAR BESIDE THE TABLE

Which Thanksgiving belongs to the memory: one from your childhood, a lesson at school or a story told by an older relative? Write down the year and location before counting. This file concerns the United States; another country’s Thanksgiving has a separate calendar. A family celebration held on a convenient day is another detail to keep attached.

THE YEAR THE CALENDAR SPLIT

The National Archives traces Roosevelt’s 1939 move to the second-to-last Thursday and the disagreement that followed. Congress settled the federal date on the fourth Thursday in 1941. Second-to-last is not always the same numbered Thursday: November can contain five. The historical change gives the investigation something more concrete than a simple claim that the date was always fixed.

THE HOLIDAY IN YOUR FIRST CALENDAR

Now return to the third Thursday you remember. Does it come with a particular wall calendar, school break or trip? If the setting is much later than the documented dispute, that matters too. A dated invitation could preserve a family’s plan; an official calendar could preserve the observance. Which one would best explain the day you are trying to find?
