THE DISCREPANCY // 069
The famous shorthand about not needing stinking badges is often attached to The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. The original exchange is longer and differently worded. Later films and imitations helped give the shorter formula another life.

BLAZING / 1974 — A small sheriff’s star carries a later date. The refusal found another film.
BEFORE THE REFERENCE
Record the exact line and speaker you picture. Does the scene contain an explanation before the refusal, or only its punchline? Keep a later comic version beside the original rather than letting one stand in for the other. The badge can remain the same while the sentence around it changes.
THE TRACE TO FOLLOW
The film reference and misquote collection provide separate paths into the exchange. Compare enough dialogue to hear how its clauses join. A familiar short phrase may still be a real quotation from another work. Which recording holds the particular delivery you have been hearing in your head?
Keep your first version
Record the detail before opening a reference. Keep the exact object, release or edition with your comparison. A first recollection and a later discovery can be followed as separate traces.
FOLLOW THE SOURCES
Compare the particular object, recording or documented account.
Reported recollections and discussion; a separate trail from the reference.
