THE DISCREPANCY // 186

Picture the man on the Quaker Oats box. Before you sharpen the smile, draw the hat. Does it rise into the corners of a tricorn, or curve around a broad rounded brim? The triangular version appears in accounts of the effect. The official portrait reference has the rounded shape, leaving the most ordinary part of a breakfast package unexpectedly hard to place.

DRAW THE TOP EDGE FIRST

Are you remembering the front of a box, an older tin or a small image in an advert? Does the brim turn up at three corners, or does a curved edge pass behind the head? Choose the object before judging the portrait. An old package could be the most useful thing in the cupboard.

A PORTRAIT WITH ITS OWN HISTORY

Quaker’s history supplies a trail of packaging and brand imagery. The face and its treatment have changed over time, so a current portrait cannot settle every older version by itself. The company also identifies its Quaker figure as a representation rather than a portrait of an actual person. The hat comparison belongs beside the particular package you remember.

THE BOX AT THE EDGE OF THE TABLE

Imagine seeing the breakfast table exactly as it used to be. Would you recognise a date from the packaging, or only the face watching from it? A remembered brim might survive while the rest of the design changes around it. The most compelling find would be the complete box that matches the hat your hand drew first.
