THE DISCREPANCY // 121
You may remember the jar better than anything you made with it: a crowded craft table, paper stuck to your fingers and a name that looked like Modge Podge. The manufacturer’s lettering is Mod Podge. A personal account published in 2019 describes the longer spelling with the certainty of someone reaching into their own cupboard.
THE JAR YOU ALREADY OWNED
This memory has a useful setting: an ordinary object that could sit in the same place for years. Picture the label before opening another tab. Did the first word end like the second? Was it something you read, something a teacher wrote on a supply list, or a name everyone said while passing the jar around? Those are different trails through the same room.
A NAME BUILT FROM ANOTHER PHRASE
Plaid connects Mod Podge to modern decoupage. The shorter first word has a documented explanation in the maker’s own account. Yet the longer remembered form has a satisfying visual balance: two words with matching endings. Place the package beside your uncorrected spelling. Which one looks more like the object that belongs on that table?
WHAT WOULD THE OLD CUPBOARD KEEP?
Imagine finding a half-used jar behind supplies you have not touched in years. The dried rim, old price sticker and worn label could tie the name to a particular purchase. Would you expect the extra letters to survive there? A complete photograph with the surrounding packaging would give the memory a much stronger home than a newly typed name.
