THE MARCH GOES ON.
WHICH WAY IS HOME?

Seven familiar figures, one familiar tune, and a destination you may supply differently.

THE DISCREPANCY // 168

Picture the dwarfs marching in single file with their tools. You know the tune before you decide where they are going. Is the familiar phrase taking them off to work, or bringing them home from it? The referenced return march in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs uses home. The other wording is so familiar that it also turns up in Disney’s own promotional writing.

CHOOSE THE DIRECTION BEFORE THE CHORUS

Rebuild the landscape around the line of figures. Is the cottage ahead of them, or the mine? Decide which journey you remember before supplying the words. A tune attached to a daily routine can feel the same in both directions while the lyric chooses one.

THE SCENE AND THE PROMOTION

The secondary lyric transcription and referenced film-scene text place home in the return march. A 2014 Disney Parks article uses the off-to-work wording in its introduction. That is a real written appearance to follow, with its own context; it is not automatically an alternate soundtrack for the 1937 scene.

A JOURNEY THAT CHANGES DIRECTION

Imagine an old sing-along starting where you expect it to. Would you notice the destination immediately, or continue singing your remembered journey over the return home? The march can keep its rhythm while the route in your head points the other way. Sometimes the mystery is a direction you were certain the whole line of figures was following.
