THE DISCREPANCY // 123

The name sounds complete before you try to spell it. For some readers and viewers, the animal doctor is Doolittle, with two Os together. The referenced Hugh Lofting title page reads Doctor Dolittle. A single extra vowel seems small, until the cover in your memory refuses to make room for the shorter name.

MEMORY STUDY // 123DO[O]LITTLECHOOSE BEFORE YOU LOOK
Archive lettering study. Follow the original references below.

CHOOSE THE SHELF OR THE SCREEN

Who was your doctor: Hugh Lofting’s illustrated character, Rex Harrison, Eddie Murphy or Robert Downey Jr.? Picture the version before writing the surname. Then place the printed name on something you remember seeing: a book spine, a video case or the first title on screen. A voice can travel between versions without showing you a single letter.

A TITLE PAGE WITH A PRINTING TRAIL

The Gutenberg reproduction opens with The Story of Doctor Dolittle, Hugh Lofting’s name and a list of printings reaching 1923. Open that front matter before jumping into the story. Now compare Universal’s 2020 Dolittle release page. The title becomes shorter, but the surname retains one O before the L. These are two specific published surfaces, separated by generations of readers and viewers.

THE COVER YOU COULD RECOGNISE BLIND

Doolittle, with two adjacent Os, is the version reported in the linked personal list. Imagine recognising your childhood edition from its colours and illustration while the name is covered. When the lettering is revealed, does the shorter form belong to that same object? The next useful clue is the whole edition you remember, with the disputed vowel still in its original place.
