THE DISCREPANCY // 113

A wide hat, a long coat and someone who is already one step ahead. Carmen Sandiego is easy to recognise from a silhouette. The colour is where the trail splits: an early Mandela Effect collection records a yellow-coat memory, while the familiar later character wears red. Older designs add another colour to the chase.

NAME YOUR VERSION

Was Carmen on a computer screen, in a television cartoon or on the cover of a game? The same character travelled through different artwork and formats. Put your remembered coat beside a year and a medium. A yellow coat in one specific childhood scene is a sharper lead than a colour floating free of its source.

THE WARDROBE HAS A HISTORY

The record is more interesting than a single red silhouette. A modern licensed game listing describes its Classic Carmen outfit as brown, before the iconic red coat. That documented variant belongs in the investigation. It does not turn every yellow memory into the same image, and it means that red should never be presented as her only historical outfit.

THE SUSPECT LEAVES THE FRAME

Imagine the last instant before she escapes. Do you see a bright yellow flash, a red sleeve or a darker coat? Is the hat the same colour? A remembered palette can feel like the fingerprint of a particular version. Save the scene you would search for, then follow the designs without letting one replace another.
