THE DISCREPANCY // 166
The white piano and bright room make the image feel almost washed in light. Now place John Lennon at the keyboard. Is he wearing white too? Some viewers remember an all-white suit in the Imagine video. The official still from the 1971 scene shows a dark jacket with small bright motifs, leaving a striking patch of contrast where memory expected the room’s pale colour to continue.
DRESS THE FIGURE AT THE KEYBOARD
Before looking at the still, decide which details you can actually recover. Is the jacket plain, patterned or simply white? Where is Yoko sitting, and what is she wearing? Give each person a separate outline. A room remembered as one luminous picture can conceal several distinct choices.
A STILL WITH A DATE
Lennon’s official single page identifies a still from the 1971 video at Tittenhurst Park. The pictured jacket is dark and patterned. Accounts of the effect contrast it with a remembered white suit. Other Lennon photographs and performances remain real images with their own dates; this comparison stays inside the room beside the piano.
THE COLOUR THAT BREAKS THE SCENE
Imagine uncovering a photograph you once kept on your wall and noticing the jacket before anything else. Would its pattern seem newly busy against the quiet room? What if the composition stayed exactly where you remembered it while one person’s colour no longer belonged? The song need not change for its familiar picture to leave you unsettled.
