THE COVER RETURNS.
WHAT IS THE RED OBJECT?

THE DISCREPANCY // 160

The cover of Born in the U.S.A. is easy to summon: Bruce Springsteen, blue jeans, the flag and something red in the back pocket. What is that last object? A bandana is a frequently reported answer. The front-cover image on Springsteen’s official album page instead reveals a baseball cap, turning a small familiar splash of colour into a different object.

Archive lettering study. Follow the original references below.

NAME THE RED SHAPE FIRST

Picture the cover at record-sleeve size rather than as a thumbnail. Is the red shape folded cloth, a brim or a cap turned away from you? Write the object down before looking for seams and fastenings. The same colour can carry a surprisingly definite identity in memory.

LOOK FOR THE OBJECT’S EDGES

The official album page dates the release to 4 June 1984 and supplies its front artwork. In that image the red object has the structure of a baseball cap. The reported discrepancy concerns this cover prop; a stage outfit or another photograph of Springsteen belongs to a different frame.

A COVER YOU THOUGHT YOU KNEW

Imagine finding the album you once kept in a crate and seeing the brim clearly for the first time. Would the detail snap into place, or leave the old bandana picture intact beside it? Nothing else has to move. Sometimes an entire familiar sleeve becomes strange because one small object changes its name.
