THE DISCREPANCY // 141
Before you picture the cereal, picture the face above it. Does Sunny look straight at you, or hide behind dark lenses? The Raisin Bran sunglasses memory has followed the mascot through years of discussion. The trail has a twist: a published design history actually describes him wearing shades. The question becomes more precise—and more interesting—when you ask where you remember seeing them.
BREAKFAST AT THE SAME TABLE
Try to recover one particular morning. Was the face on a cereal box, a television advert or a picture beside a promotion? Place the sunglasses on your remembered sun before checking another image. A detail can feel inseparable from a character while still belonging to a very specific appearance.
A MASCOT WITH MORE THAN ONE FACE
Sunny has changed over time. A design retrospective credits Kellogg’s imagery and explicitly includes sunglasses in its account of earlier advertising. That makes a blanket claim that the glasses never existed a poor fit for this file. What remains to follow is the exact box, commercial or year attached to your memory.
THE VERSION THAT SAT ACROSS FROM YOU
Imagine finding a photograph of your childhood kitchen. The box is on the table, partly hidden by a bowl. Would a clear view of its mascot feel like an answer, or raise another question about the version you carried with you? Keep the remembered face intact while you follow the packaging trail.
