THE DISCREPANCY // 112

The rhythm is easy to summon. Baloo enters King Louie’s world in a leafy disguise, and the dance takes over. For some viewers, the outfit includes a coconut bra. The familiar 1967 sequence instead places coconut pieces around his snout. It is a tiny wardrobe change with an unusually vivid afterimage.

STOP BEFORE THE REVEAL

Picture Baloo as he first steps into the number. Start at the head, then move down to the chest and the skirt. Where are the coconut halves? Does your memory contain straps, a knot or just two circles? Draw the outfit before replaying the scene; the movement can make a still detail surprisingly hard to isolate.

FOLLOW THE DISGUISE

This file concerns the animated 1967 film. Theme-park costumes, stage adaptations, later illustrations and fan drawings have their own trails. If your version comes from a live performance, keep that setting attached to it. A photograph from a parade could answer one question while leaving the film memory untouched.

A COSTUME WITHOUT A FRAME

The striking part is how complete an unlocated image can feel. You may remember the sway of the skirt, the music and a chest covering as one continuous moment. Which frame would you pause to prove it? Follow Disney’s film gallery, then ask whether the image you carried arrives before or after the disguise comes apart.
