THE DISCREPANCY // 111
The red cow is laughing. The wedges are wrapped in foil. And somewhere on that familiar face, a small gold ring seems to belong. Some people can place it with startling confidence. The packaging offers a different arrangement: round cheese-box earrings and a bare nose.
PLACE THE RING FIRST
Before looking at a package, draw the face from memory. Does the ring hang through the nose, or from an ear? Is it gold, red or the colour of the box? The distinction matters: a remembered nose ring is a different detail from simply remembering round jewellery. Keep that first sketch beside the reference.
A FACE INSIDE A FACE
The earrings themselves invite a closer look. Little boxes repeat the laughing face, carrying the same design into a smaller circle. A childhood memory might keep the red head and the rings without preserving the place where each one attaches. Or perhaps the misplaced ring is exactly the part you remember most clearly.
THE DETAIL THAT REFUSES TO MOVE
The brand dates the addition of earrings to 1924. That gives the official design a long paper trail, but it also makes the remembered gold ring more curious. Which kitchen, lunchbox or shop shelf holds your version? An old package with a date and country would give that image somewhere concrete to land.
