THE DISCREPANCY // 081
Some readers remember Danielle Steele with a final e. The author’s official name is Danielle Steel. Large lettering repeated across many covers can make a single missing ending feel unexpectedly noticeable.

E / LAST LEAF — A tiny E is folded into a page corner. Check the edge before closing the book.
BEFORE THE REFERENCE
Picture a particular novel instead of a shelf in general. Which cover, typeface and country do you remember? Write the surname and then the title. A bookseller listing can contain a different spelling from the jacket it describes; keep the two objects beside one another.
THE TRACE TO FOLLOW
The author’s bookshelf supplies identifiable cover references. Follow a dated edition with the complete spine and title page if you can. A handwritten reading list is another personal trace. Which book would you reach for first if you wanted the last letter to reappear?
Keep your first version
Record the detail before opening a reference. Keep the exact object, release or edition with your comparison. A first recollection and a later discovery can be followed as separate traces.
FOLLOW THE SOURCES
Compare the particular object, recording or documented account.
Reported recollections and discussion; a separate trail from the reference.
