THE DISCREPANCY // 063

Some people associate Ed McMahon with Publishers Clearing House. PCH states he was not affiliated with it; his sweepstakes work was with American Family Publishers. The remembered scene often includes an oversized cheque and a surprise arrival.

AFP / NOT PCH — Two tiny envelope stamps point to different senders. The delivery has an address.

Provisional detail study, not source evidence. Compare the original object or recording through the references.

BEFORE THE REFERENCE

Keep company, presenter and delivery separate when rebuilding the commercial. What logo was visible, and who actually appeared at a doorstep? A later joke or tribute can preserve a familiar association without being the advertisement you watched. Note which recording would settle the company name for you.

THE TRACE TO FOLLOW

The PCH answer supplies the company’s own account. Compare a complete, dated AFP advertisement rather than a caption placed over an isolated frame. Even published biographies can repeat an association, so follow the underlying commercial when possible. Which name do you still expect the announcer to say?

Keep your first version

Record the detail before opening a reference. Keep the exact object, release or edition with your comparison. A first recollection and a later discovery can be followed as separate traces.
