THE DISCREPANCY // 045
The reported pose puts The Thinker’s hand against his forehead, while the museum reference places support beneath the chin. Some accounts describe more than one perceived change. This file begins with a pose you can reproduce before seeing the reference image.

The little base is marked INFERNO / GATE. The figure began beside a much larger doorway.
TAKE THE POSE
Place your hand where the gesture feels natural, then record the elbow and knee as well. A sculpture is not only a hand position. The museum description supplies a particular reference cast. Another angle, crop or imitation can change which contact point is easiest to see.
THE BODY AS A MEMORY TRACE
A photograph of someone copying the pose records that person’s gesture, not automatically the sculpture’s earlier form. Keep both figures in the frame if the statue is visible nearby. The question is compelling because your body can arrive at a remembered version before your eyes consult the bronze.
Keep your first version
Record the detail before opening a reference. Keep the exact object, release or edition with your comparison. A first recollection and a later discovery can be followed as separate traces.
THE HAND THAT FOUND ITS WAY BACK
REPORTED SEQUENCE
chin → forehead → chin
Return reports describe a hand at the chin, then at the forehead, then back at the chin. Some writers notice a second disturbance after the return: the hand seems extended where they expected a closed fist. Position and hand shape are two details, and they need two entries in the notebook.
Compare the same cast, photograph and angle. The Thinker exists in multiple casts and sizes; a pose reconstructed from memory should not quietly become a photograph of a particular sculpture. Where did you first see the version that now feels absent?
Reported checks and recollections; the sequence is not an authenticated record of a changing artifact.
