THE CAPTAIN
AND THE NAME

You can picture the captain. Now write what the box calls him.

THE DISCREPANCY // 026

The remembered alternative writes out Captain Crunch. The reference brand name contracts the first word to Cap’n. A character’s occupation and the letters on his cereal box can feel like the same fact until you try to put both on paper.

The insignia has a fourth stripe in its shadow. Ranks are not always what they seem.

NAME THE CHARACTER, THEN THE BOX

Start with a spoken answer, then a written one. Is your memory about what somebody called the mascot, or about the actual title above him? A childhood conversation and a printed box are different traces. Notice whether the apostrophe arrives automatically or only after the comparison is shown.

A TITLE WITH A SMALL GAP

PepsiCo’s official brand material uses the contraction. For an older check, retain the exact product and packaging region. A shortened name on a modern website is one reference; a dated breakfast photograph is another. Which object would you search for if the full word still feels as though it belongs?

Keep your first version

Record the detail before opening a reference. Keep the exact object, release or edition with your comparison. A first recollection and a later discovery can be followed as separate traces.
