CASE FILE 173 // MUSIC

THE GLOVE CATCHES LIGHT.
WHICH HAND IS IT?

Before copying the pose, decide whose left and right you are seeing.

THE DISCREPANCY // 173

Raise the hand you picture when Michael Jackson’s single glove catches the spotlight. Is it your right, his right, or a hand in a photograph you have seen reversed? Some memories attach the glove permanently to one side. Dated costume accounts complicate that certainty: left and right gloves both belong to his performance history. The more interesting question is which moment your remembered pose preserves.

COPY THE POSE BEFORE THE PHOTO

Choose a particular performance and place the microphone too. Stand as the performer would, rather than as a person facing him. A mirrored image reverses the view without changing the garment. Keep the remembered pose long enough to decide which side you are actually naming.

A GLOVE WITH A PERFORMANCE DATE

Contemporary reporting identifies a left-hand glove with Motown 25 in 1983. Heritage’s catalogue describes a right-hand glove from an August 1984 Victory Tour performance. These references answer different dated questions. One cannot establish that the glove occupied the same hand in every appearance.

THE REFLECTION YOU CARRIED

Imagine discovering the photograph you copied as a child. Would it explain the side you chose, or make the pose you remember feel more stubborn? A genuine change between performances can leave two familiar images in circulation. What remains to follow is the one that feels like the only version you ever knew.
